Double Agent, an Autobiography
Double Agent, an Autobiography
Description
Yes!, I was a Double Agent. That is a "profession" you can't apply for. You just get into it. I went to visit my girlfriend in East Germany. The security service knew that, of course. We talked for four hours in a café. They had vodka with beer; I had coffee. I was "hired" immediately. I told the story to our security service, BVD, in the Netherlands via the police. Five days later, I was "hired" there too. I had to do everything the East German military intelligence service wanted and share everything with the BVD. How often I laughed with the men of that service! The East Germans thought they were taking excellent care of my safety during my assignments in Western Europe. But with their security advice, I would have been arrested immediately. I acted in my Western way as a journalist and did not arouse any suspicion. Of course, I made mistakes. That's why I was arrested twice by the East German Volkspolizei. But at the police station, that ended in a serious chess game with a strong opponent. Once, the men of the espionage service had to wait an hour and a half before our game ended in a draw. In short, it was a very nice and educational experience. My adventure ended because my wife and I had a son and I became responsible for a family. This book shows how indoctrinated people, despite a high education, have no insight into what is happening outside their country. This book is, therefore, a plea for Western democracy.
